The announcement follows the global reveal of the CLA at CES 2024, where Mercedes showcased its MB.OS operating system upgrade. The new platform integrates Google Cloud’s Gemini AI and leverages Vertex AI, designed specifically for advanced automotive applications. With capabilities like natural language understanding, predictive responses, personalization, and empathetic interactions, the upgraded MBUX Virtual Assistant sets new standards for in-car technology.
Enhanced Features for Drivers
The MBUX Virtual Assistant now offers four distinct personality traits: natural, predictive, personal, and empathetic. It can ask follow-up questions to clarify user requests, ensuring that drivers and passengers get exactly what they need. The AI-driven assistant also provides nearly real-time updates from Google Maps, helping drivers find points of interest, access restaurant reviews, receive tailored recommendations, and handle complex multi-turn dialogues effortlessly.
With Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent, drivers can experience smarter navigation, including up-to-date traffic conditions and personalized suggestions based on their preferences. The system’s ability to reference and retain contextual information throughout a journey enhances convenience and safety.
Plans for Broader Integration
The existing MBUX Voice Assistant, already offering basic command functionality powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing, is also set to receive updates. Mercedes plans to extend the upgraded AI platform to additional models with the older voice assistant, although specific vehicles have yet to be announced.
