BYD has launched a new electric SUV in China, the Sealion 05 EV, with a starting price of 117,800 yuan (about 16,240 USD). This SUV offers a modern design, advanced features, and a good driving range. It could be a strong competitor in the Nepali market, especially in the 50-lakh price range, where electric SUVs are becoming popular.
Design & Features
The BYD Sealion 05 EV is a compact SUV built on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture. It follows BYD’s new “Ocean Aesthetics” design, featuring sleek LED headlights and a minimal front end. It has a stylish look with flush door handles, black B- and C-pillars, and an eye-catching taillight design. The size of this SUV is 4520 mm long, 1860 mm wide, and 1630 mm tall, similar to the Volkswagen Tiguan.
This SUV is not just stylish but also practical. It has a large 600-liter trunk that expands to 1460 liters when the rear seats are folded. Additionally, it has a 110-liter front trunk for extra storage.
Inside, the Sealion 05 EV comes with a 12.8-inch center touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. The gear shifter is placed on the steering column, following a new trend in modern Chinese cars. Other features include physical buttons on the center console, a wireless phone charger, and a pair of cup holders.
One standout feature is the built-in refrigerator, which can cool down to -6°C and heat up to 50°C. It also includes the “God’s Eye” C driving assistance system (DiPilot 100) with five mm-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 12 cameras for semi-autonomous driving on highways.
Performance & Variants
The BYD Sealion 05 EV comes in two power options:
- Base Variant: A 140 kW (188 hp) rear-wheel-drive motor with a 50 kWh battery, offering a 430 km driving range (CLTC).
- Higher Variant: A 160 kW (215 hp) motor with a 60.9 kWh battery, providing a longer 520 km range.
It is one of the few BYD SUVs with a rear-wheel-drive setup. The price for this electric SUV ranges from 117,800 to 137,800 yuan (16,240 – 19,000 USD).
Potential Arrival in Nepal & Competition
BYD has been expanding globally, and the Sealion series is aimed at overseas markets. Since BYD already sells EVs in Nepal, the Sealion 05 EV might arrive here soon. If launched, it will compete in the 50-lakh price range, going up against models like the MG S5 EV, Hyundai Creta EV, and other electric SUVs.
With its modern design, long range, and competitive pricing, the BYD Sealion 05 EV could be a strong option for Nepali buyers looking for a premium electric SUV. If introduced, it could be a game-changer in Nepal’s growing EV market.
