Sony has officially taken the wraps off its latest flagship smartphone — the Xperia 1 VII — and it’s a masterclass in everything the brand is known for. With its familiar design, serious audio and camera hardware, and a blend of tech borrowed from Sony’s Walkman, Alpha, and Bravia divisions, this phone is a “greatest hits” of Sony’s R&D departments.
While other manufacturers chase flashy trends, Sony continues to cater to enthusiasts — and the Xperia 1 VII is no exception.
Classic Sony, Packed With Power
From the outside, the Xperia 1 VII doesn’t stray far from Sony’s signature look — tall, narrow, minimalist. Inside, however, it’s packed with high-end components: a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (Elite) chipset, 12GB RAM, and 256GB storage, plus microSD card expansion up to 2TB — a rare feature in 2025 flagships.
It also keeps fan-favorite features like the 3.5mm headphone jack, dedicated camera shutter button, and IP65/IP68 water and dust resistance.
Upgraded Cameras With Alpha DNA
Sony is leaning on its Alpha camera division once again. The major upgrade this year is a new 48MP ultrawide camera — with a sensor twice the size of the one in last year’s Xperia 1 VI, addressing a key weakness in that model.
The phone also includes an AI-powered auto-framing feature that automatically crops video to keep human subjects centered, ideal for vloggers and creators. However, the auto-framed video is capped at Full HD resolution.
Returning are the excellent main camera and variable telephoto lens, giving the Xperia 1 VII some of the most versatile optics available in a phone.
Walkman-Level Audio — Yes, Really
Sony’s legendary Walkman team helped design the audio system, bringing high-end components like premium soldering for the headphone jack. The result? Exceptional wired audio performance. It also supports Hi-Res Audio, LDAC, DSEE Ultimate AI upscaling, and Dolby Atmos, along with upgraded stereo speakers that now feature stronger bass output.
Bravia Tech Enhances the Display
The 6.5-inch 4K OLED display benefits from Sony’s Bravia TV division, featuring smarter adaptive brightness thanks to sensors on both the front and back of the phone. These allow for more accurate color and brightness adjustments depending on the lighting around you — a small but impactful upgrade.
Battery, Charging, and Software Support
The Xperia 1 VII features a 5,000mAh battery with wireless charging, promising full-day usage even with heavy camera or display use. The main disappointment here is software support: Sony only promises four years of Android OS updates and six years of security patches, falling short compared to the seven years offered by Samsung and Google.
Nepal Availability and Pricing
As of now, the Xperia 1 VII is not launching in the US or in Nepal, but is available for pre-order in the UK and Europe, priced at:
- £1,399 / €1,499 (~NPR 226,000 approx.)
There’s no official confirmation yet about its availability in Nepal, but expect grey market imports or local sellers to bring it in shortly after global release. Expect a starting price north of NPR 240,000 due to taxes and import duties.
Should You Consider the Xperia 1 VII in Nepal?
If you’re a photography enthusiast, audiophile, or someone who values expandable storage, the Xperia 1 VII is a rare breed in the smartphone market. It’s not for the average user — but for the right person, it could be the perfect creative tool in your pocket.
