Malaysia’s national car brand Proton is preparing to introduce its affordable electric hatchback Proton e.MAS 5 in the Nepali market. The company’s official distributor in Nepal, Jagadamba Motors, plans to start sales of the EV from the upcoming Nepali New Year.
The e.MAS 5 is a compact electric hatchback developed by Proton using technology from Chinese automaker Geely. The model is essentially a rebadged version of Geely’s Geely Xingyuan, which has been performing strongly in the Chinese market and is among the top-selling compact EVs there.
Compact Hatchback with Modern Styling
Designed around Geely’s “Smile” design theme, the e.MAS 5 features a modern and sharp appearance. The hatchback measures 4,135 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, making it slightly larger than many traditional hatchbacks in the segment.
Although the hatchback segment in Nepal has gradually been shrinking in recent years as buyers shift toward SUVs, Proton is aiming to attract urban EV buyers looking for a compact, efficient city car.
Two Motor and Battery Options
Globally, the e.MAS 5 is offered with two electric motor options:
- 58 kW motor
- 85 kW motor
It is likely that the 85 kW version will be introduced in Nepal.
The EV also comes with two battery options:
- 30.12 kWh CATL LFP battery with around 225 km WLTP range
- 40.16 kWh CATL LFP battery with around 325 km WLTP range
The battery uses Geely’s Sendem battery safety system, designed to improve durability and safety.
Charging and Performance
The electric hatchback supports both AC and DC charging:
- 3.3 kW AC charging
- Up to 80 kW DC fast charging
According to the company, the battery can charge from 30% to 80% in about 21 minutes using a fast charger.
Feature-Rich Cabin
Inside, the Proton e.MAS 5 offers a technology-focused cabin with several modern features, including:
- 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster
- 10.1-inch or 14.6-inch infotainment display
- HiCar connectivity
- 50W wireless charger
- 256-color ambient lighting
- Keyless entry
- Leatherette seats
- 6-way adjustable driver seat
- 70-liter front trunk (frunk)
The car can comfortably accommodate five passengers.
Safety and ADAS
Safety is another highlight of the e.MAS 5. The EV comes equipped with:
- 6 airbags
- 360-degree camera
- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS 2.0)
- Intelligent driver assistance features
- Rear multi-link suspension
- Traction control system
Expected Price in Nepal
In Malaysia, the Proton e.MAS 5 is priced at RM 56,800 for the Prime variant and RM 69,800 for the Premium variant (approximately NPR 16–20 lakh before taxes).
Considering Nepal’s EV import duties and market positioning, the hatchback is expected to be priced between NPR 30 – 40 lakh when it launches locally.
If priced competitively, the e.MAS 5 could become one of the most affordable feature-packed electric hatchbacks in Nepal, targeting buyers who want a compact EV with modern technology and practical daily usability.
