Torque Motors, the official distributor of BMW motorcycles in Nepal, has ceased the production of BMW motorcycles available in the Nepali market, seven years after their initial launch. The discontinuation affects BMW motorcycles manufactured in India and imported into Nepal.
The decision by BMW to halt production of its G 310 series motorcycles in India is attributed to the mandatory implementation of On-Board Diagnostics Phase 2 (OBD 2B) emission standards in the Indian market.
The renowned German brand BMW had been producing the G 310 series in India in collaboration with TVS Motor Company. These more budget-friendly BMW motorcycles gained traction in the Nepali market, largely due to their price point.
Torque Motors, which also sells premium motorcycle brands like Ducati and Husqvarna in Nepal, introduced the India-made BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS models to the Nepali market in December 2018.
Notably, Torque Motors has not imported the BMW G 310 series motorcycles for the past two years. Since their initial introduction, approximately 350 units of the BMW G 310 series motorcycles are estimated to be on Nepali roads.
The halt in production of the G 310 series in India has raised concerns regarding the future availability of spare parts. When questioned about this, the company’s Service Manager, Amit Jha, assured customers, “We placed a parts order just a few days ago, and it will arrive in Nepal within the next week. The BMW 310 series motorcycles have sold in large numbers in India, so there will be no issue with parts availability.”
Despite the discontinuation of the India-made G 310 series, the company has indicated plans to introduce BMW’s new 450cc adventure motorcycle in Nepal.
“Currently, many customers are expressing concerns about the availability of parts and service,” stated Mr. Jha to Mero Auto. “Torque Motors urges all BMW customers to ride their motorcycles with confidence.”
Mr. Jha also mentioned that Torque Motors is preparing to launch the G 450 GS in Nepal shortly after its official release in India.
