The updated MG4 electric hatchback has officially entered mass production at SAIC Motor’s Nanjing facility in China, with its global debut slated for August and market launch expected in September. The all-new MG4 brings a bigger footprint, refined design, upgraded technology, and the promise of improved daily usability — all of which may help strengthen its position in Nepal’s growing EV segment.
Bigger, Bolder, and Better
The new MG4 now measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with an extended wheelbase of 2,750 mm. Compared to the outgoing model (4,287 mm long and 2,705 mm wheelbase), this growth suggests more interior room — a welcome change for Nepali buyers seeking better practicality and comfort.
The updated design draws heavy inspiration from the MG Cyberster electric roadster, featuring a striking sculpted front fascia, split LED headlamps, and an illuminated MG emblem up front. The wide-body look and reduced overhangs add a sporty stance, while the added cabin space positions it slightly above key rivals like the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.
Rear-Wheel Drive Performance Remains
Mechanically, MG retains the rear-wheel-drive layout with a 120 kW rear-mounted electric motor — a configuration praised by driving enthusiasts in Nepal for its balanced handling. The car continues with a MacPherson strut front and five-link independent rear suspension, ensuring a familiar ride quality but possibly improved with chassis tweaks.
Although official battery specs haven’t been revealed, Chinese media hints at the possibility of a semi-solid-state battery that could offer up to 800 km range under CLTC testing. If true, that would make the MG4 one of the longest-range EVs in its segment — a major advantage for longer routes and intercity travel across Nepal.
A New Digital Experience with Oppo Integration
A major highlight is the introduction of the MG×Oppo cockpit system. Co-developed with the smartphone giant, this system allows gesture-based navigation, voice control, AI assistant support, and seamless smartphone-app mirroring. In Nepal, where smartphone integration is increasingly important for daily use, this system could be a game-changer.
Inside, the MG4 features a minimalist dashboard, a floating center touchscreen, a rectangular digital instrument panel, and a two-spoke multifunction steering wheel. Other notable interior upgrades include:
- Wireless charging pad
- Column-mounted electronic gear selector
- Heated and ventilated seats with power adjustment
- L2+ driver assistance system with Highway NOA (Navigate on Autopilot)
New Colors for 2025
Two new paint options debut with this update:
- Donglai Purple: A dynamic metallic purple with shifting tones under sunlight
- Qingbo Green: A pearlescent green finish using imported European pigments
A prototype in Donglai Purple was recently spotted in the wild in China, confirming MG’s commitment to bolder styling.
What It Means for Nepal
In Nepal, the MG4 already has a niche following, especially among EV enthusiasts who appreciate its rear-wheel-drive dynamics. However, it struggled to gain wider popularity due to concerns around ground clearance, especially in hilly and rough terrains.
With the new MG4’s increased dimensions and redesigned stance, there’s renewed optimism. If MG Nepal addresses the clearance issue in the localized version, the updated MG4 could directly challenge best-sellers like the BYD Dolphin, Tata Nexon EV, Tata Punch EV and other upcoming cars under 50 lakhs.
Launch Timeline and Expected Arrival in Nepal
MG is expected to open pre-orders in China on August 5, with the official launch on September 5. Based on past trends, the updated MG4 could arrive in Nepal by early 2026, depending on regional allocations and MG Nepal’s import schedule.
We’ll continue to monitor the MG4’s progress and share updates once local launch details are confirmed.
